a5c7b9f00b Riggs and Murtaugh are at it again in this sequel to the original Lethal Weapon in 1987. When a red BMW crashes while they are chasing it, they discover the trunk is full of South African Krugerrands. Their boss assigns them to protect a federal witness named Leo Getz to try and keep them out of trouble. When the witness reveals he has been doing business with South Africans, the story evolves into a fast moving chase. Los Angeles police sergeant Roger Murtaugh and his partner, Sergeant Martin Riggs, are working on yet another drug-related case. Soon after finding one million dollars worth of South African Krugerrands in a crashed red BMW after a chase, Riggs and Murtaugh are assigned to keep an eye on Leo Getz, who is scheduled to testify in a case. There are people who don't want Leo to testify: a group of drug smugglers led by Arjen Rudd, the minister of diplomatic affairs for the South African consulate. Rudd turns out to be the man that Riggs and Murtaugh are after in the drug case they were working on before Leo was placed in their protective custody, which doesn't look very protective when Leo is kidnapped by Rudd's right hand man Pieter Vorstedt. Riggs ends up falling for Rudd's secretary Rika Van Den Haas, who doesn't like Rudd. In a confrontation with Vorstedt, Riggs is told the true circumstances behind the death of his wife Vicky, who died in a car crash in 1984: the car crash was caused by Vorstedt, who was supposed to have killed Riggs. Minutes after Vorstedt tries to kill Riggs, Riggs finds Rika dead, and this sends Riggs over the edge. The tone is a bit lighter, but the `lethal' action continues unabated and non-stoptwo of L.A.P.D.'s finest go after a South African consulate, dirty up to his neck in drugs and hiding behind diplomatic immunity in `Lethal Weapon 2,' directed by Richard Donner and once again starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Still crazy, but no longer suicidal, Riggs (Gibson) continues to hunt down the bad guys with partner Roger Murtaugh (Glover), and this time around they find their lives in danger when they get too close to the underhanded dealings of South African Arjen `Aryan' Rudd (Joss Ackland) and his band of thugs. Along the way, they're assigned to baby-sit an informant in a money laundering racket, Leo Getz (Joe Pesci); and Riggs at last finds someone, Rika Van Den Haas (Patsy Kensit), who helps ease the pain of his wife's death, while also discovering who was responsible for the automobile accident that took her life.

As he did with the first `Lethal Weapon,' Donner keeps it all moving along at a brisk pace, though he allows the intensity level to drop somewhat this time while infusing more humor. There's some `Stooges' on hand, and a bit that finds Murtaugh the target of some office gags after the debut of a television commercial, starring his daughter, Rianne (Traci Wolfe), for a product that takes him by surprise, but the real laughs come courtesy of Pesci, who's upbeat, manic characterization of Getz becomes a real scene stealer. Though serious at the core, this movie is more of a joy ride than the first, though there are moments of true menace and apprehension, wella sobering resolution involving one of the featured characters. Performance wise, Gibson ischarismaticever, by now settling comfortably into Riggs' skin while further exploring the more intricate details of the character's personality. Glover, too, manages to take Murtaugh to the next level, leaving no doubtto who this guy is and what he's about, from his dedication to the job, to his even more stringent dedication to his family. And, most importantly, these two really clicka team, and Donner knows just how to bring out the best in them. What really raises the bar in this second installment, however, is the addition of Pesci, who makes Leo Getz a truly memorable character. Inserting him into the mix was a real stroke of genius, and Donner wisely uses him just enough to effectively lighten the mood and counteract the drama.

The supporting cast includes Darlene Love (Trish), Derrick O'Connor (Adolph), Steve Kahan (Capt. Murphy), Mark Rolston (Hans) and Jenette Goldstein (Officer Meagan Shapiro). With snappy dialogue, plenty of action and some good guys to root for, `Lethal Weapon 2' is a thoroughly entertaining sequel that more than does justice to the original. Donner knows his territory, and his stars know their stuff and how to deliver it, and that's a `lethal' combination any way you look at it. And what's even more gratifying, is knowing that they didn't stop here; after all the action of the first two, you know there's another one waiting for you. At this point, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars; `Lethal Weapon 3' is available, and it's yours for the asking. I rate this one 9/10. This didn't live up to the awesomeness of the first film for me but it was still a hell of a ride. Unfortunately there's so many big action scenes here that it loses a bit of its charm, heading into over-the-top territory. Joe Pesci's character didn't help either, and I found his interaction, the third wheel with Riggs and Murtaugh extremely annoying. Thankfully the plot moves along at a supercharged rate and he gets overshadowed.

Still this is better than a lot of sequels,LA detective Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh (Danny Glover) reprise their roles and chemistry this time battling a vicious South African drug cartel.

I also enjoyed the quieter side here and seeing how Martin's relationship (and mental status) had progressed, in particular in his scenes with Rogers wife and family. Sadly he has bad luck in love again and a sore shoulder. 07.13 Lethal Weapon 2 is that rarity - a sequel with most of the same qualitiesthe original. I walked into the movie with a certain dread. But this is a film with the same off-center invention and wild energythe original. After engaging in a high speed chase with South African smugglers and recovering a trunk full of krugerrands, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) are assigned to the less dangerous job of protecting federal witness Leo Getz (Joe Pesci). Soon, however, they learn that Getz is involved in the same smuggling ring, laundering money made by South African diplomats hiding under their diplomatic immunity status. Lethal Weapon 2 is the second movie in the Lethal Weapon series, preceded by Lethal Weapon (1987) (1987) and followed by Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) (1992) and Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) (1998). It is based on a story and screenplay by American screenwriters Shane Black (who created the characters in the first movie), Warren Murphy, and Jeffrey Boam. Krugerrands are a South African monetary unit made mostly of solid gold (with a little copper thrown in). The chief monetary unit of South Africa is called the "rand". "Kruger" comes from the face depicted on the coin of Paul Kruger, president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. They aren't anymore. However, during the 1970s and '80s, they were outlawed because of South Africa's position on apartheid. Apartheid is a system of racial segregation in South Africa that limited the rights of black South Africans and kept them "apart" from white South Africans. Apartheid existed in South Africa for decades until it was abolished 1994. In southern Africa, "kaffir" is a ethnic slur referring to a black person. No. The scene requires a serious amount of suspension of disbelief but it really makes for a fun action sequence. Riggs is driving a large, heavy-duty GMC Sierra (a 1989) that likely has a V8 engine and also has a heavy duty rear suspension setup— he uses it to tow the trailer he lives in. However, Riggs wraps the chain he uses to pull out the stilt near the base of the stilt where it's bolted to the concrete post. The bolts, plus the weight of the house on the stilt would make it impossible to yank out with Riggs' truck. In reality, depending on where Riggs had secured the chain to his truck—it looks like it's been attached to the rear axle assembly—the force would have either bent the axle severely or ripped it loose from the undercarriage. It's possible he could have bent the stilt enough if he'd attached the chain about halfway along the length of the support but that would be highly unlikely too, i.e., it would cause some damage to the stilt itself but it's unlikely the whole house would come down. Yes and no. The house that's destroyed in the movie was a replica built on a backlot at Warner Studios. The real house was useda shooting location but it's still standing at 7436 Mulholland Drive in Beverly Hills. It was designed by a man named John Lautner, who was a famous architect. Trapped in the shipping container loaded with South African drug lord Arjen Rudd's (Joss Ackland) Mercedes and shrink-wrapped packages containing hundreds of million of dollars of American money, Riggs and Murtaugh wait until the container is hanging over the Alba Varden. The container doors suddenly burst open and the Mercedes comes flying, exploding into a fireball and followed by thousands of bills, which scatter irretrievably on the water. Riggs and Murtaugh then rappel from the container into the ship's cargo hold. A fight breaks out during which Riggs and Murtaugh manage to take out several of Rudd's henchmen. However, Rudd's hired assassin, Pieter Vorstedt (Derrick O'Connor) succeeds in tossing a knife into Riggs' right hamstring, disabling him. Riggs manages to get up on his feet, pulls out the knife, and uses it to stab Vorstedt several times in the gut. When Vorstedt also gets up and pulls a gun on Riggs, Riggs finishes him off by pressing the loading button that releases the overhanging container pod. It falls on Vorstedt, crushing him. When Murtaugh calls out to Riggs to see if he's okay, Rudd open fires on Riggs, pumping several bullets into him. Murtaught turns on Rudd, who is flashing his dipolatic immuity card, but shoots him anyway. "It's just been revoked," he yells out. Murtaugh rushes to his severely-wounded partner and cradles Riggs' seemingly lifeless head in his arms. "You're not dead," Murtaugh entones over and over, "not until I tell you." Riggs replies by asking Murtaugh to reach into his pocket and get his cigarettes. Once Murtaugh has the pack, Riggs tells him to throw them away, saying, "Those things will kill ya!" Riggs then asks whether they've managed to get all the bad guys, and Murtaugh replies, "They've all been de-kaffir-nated." Sharing a laugh together, Riggs and Murtaugh await the arriving police, whose sirens can be heard in the distance.
